After a trial or guilty plea, a conviction becomes final. But if the conviction was obtained illegally - based on illegally obtained evidence, an unfair trial, or an accusation later proved to be false - it may be possible to get post-conviction relief either directly on appeal or by a procedure known as a writ of habeas corpus. Cases in which a conviction is already final are some of the hardest cases to win, and there are many procedural roadblocks to overcome.
